We often hear the term self-harm and it wrongly has associations with ‘emo’s’ ‘goth’s’ and those who are seeking attention from others, when this couldn’t be further from the truth. I recently wrote an article for Mental Healthy on the huge rise of young people receiving medical treatment for self-harm and at the same time of hearing of these statistics, came across a YouTube video of a very brave young man from the US speaking out about his experiences of that and homophobic bullying. It’s the 10th of October which marks the yearly event of World Mental Health Day, but for you guys I wanted to concentrate on something that I feel is a contributing factor to so many young people developing mental health issues. An issue that affect so many of us as young people and really has no place in our society.

Figures release by the NHS this week show a near four-fold increase in the number of young people under 25 receiving weight loss surgery on the NHS. Between 2009 and 2010 a record 210 of the gastric band operations were carried out, compared to just 55 between 2006 and 2007. Of that 210, thirty four were performed on people under 19.

Eating disorders are serious and complex conditions, affecting people of any age and gender, with the condition Anorexia Nervosa carrying the highest mortality rate of any mental illness.

I recently wrote for Mental Healthy articles about the rise of eating disorders in men and the rise of young people being admitted to hospital for eating disorders and yet despite these alarming figures there is still a distinct lack of research in the area of men and the experiences of young people.
